Kanye West and Taylor Swift

by

The biggest issue right now in pop culture, for the minute, seems to be the whole Kanye West/Taylor Swift deal.  For those of you who don’t know, I in particular, but both of us really, am a huge Kanye West fan.  I think his blog is the best thing on the internet, and of course, I’m a fan of the music, the clothes, what have you.  Okay, so in case you’ve been living in a cave for the last couple of days, at the MTV VMAs on Sunday night, Taylor Swift won the best Female Artist award.  When she went on stage to accept her award, Kanye West popped up out of nowhere, took the mic and basically said ‘Congratulations, but Beyonce (also a nominee) had one of the best videos of all time! Just so you know.’  Anyway, this ended up being a HUGE deal.  And Kanye West has been getting SO much crap for his actions.   When I told Ashley about this latest stunt, she was ecstatic, and thought that this was a stroke of genius that should be lauded by everyone!  She’s a huge Beyonce fan by the way!!  I on the other hand was a little more apprehensive on this one.  At an event like the VMAs you can pretty much expect anything to go on, but I wasn’t comfortable with this one, because, whether purposely or not, it singled out Taylor Swift as an individual a little too much.

Since everything’s gone down, he’s apologized, and I think that he really is sorry, and it’s all good.  I think that people might be trippin out a bit too much on this one.  Sorry, Taylor Swift….I guess?

And I would actually like to weigh in on this… situation. I am a huge Beyonce fan and a rather intense Kanye fan as well, BUT I also enjoy Taylor Swift’s music very much. I think it’s pretty good for the most part.

But first of all, let’s be honest. That music video that she won the award for is very lame. And the only reason it won is because a lot of people are very lame. Especially the kind that actually give enough of a shit to make their opinions heard in these second-rate award shows.

Kanye West did something very revolutionary. I agree that it was quite mean-spirited, as he clearly was only thinking of giving credit where credit was due, and not about who it would affect. But who else would ever do something like that?!?!??! NO ONE else has the balls to do anything even close to that, and I just don’t understand why no one cares about that. That is AWESOME.

Even if you feel bad for Taylor Swift, and that’s fine – we probably should – we don’t have to feel that sorry for her. She’s 19 years old and has more money and fame than most of the world’s population will ever have in their lives. She gets to get dolled up in a sparkly dress and have people take pictures of her and tell her how much they love her. And she’ll get to do this over and over again. So stop acting like it sucks to be her. Her music video is lame and she knows it. She was as surprised to have won as she was to see Kanye West show up out of nowhere.

And besides, the VMA’s and Taylor Swift’s winning of an award of any kind would have gone completely unknown to many people if this had not occurred. I certainly would not have known these things even happened.

And you CANNOT say that Taylor Swift has not been milking this shit! She went on The View and tried to make a point of saying that her only thought when going up to receive the award was “This is so great, I’ll get to thank the fans!” and then that her only thought the moment after it happened was, “Oh okay, I guess I don’t get to thank the fans…” PUH-LEASE!!!! ARE YOU JOKING?!?!??! That is so lame and such a pathetic attempt at even more sympathy than she has already been given.

Everyone needs to let it go. She will go back to creating poppy songs with a hint of country in them, that I will honestly continue to enjoy, and Beyonce and Kanye West will continue to do revolutionary things in the music industry.
